Die komplette Folge des Zoo-Leipzig-Podcasts steht im Namen der „seltsamen und oft verkannten Tiere“ – dabei geht es um nicht weniger als Quallen. Der Zoo selbst beherbergt Exemplare der Ohrenqualle. Und wer jetzt denkt: „Quallen sind doch total langweilig“. Weit gefehlt! Wusstest du zum Beispiel, dass die Tiere am Schirmrand kleine Einstülpungen haben? Dort sitzen insgesamt sechs Augen! Zwei von ihnen sind dabei aufgebaut wie menschliche Augen – mit Linse, Netzhaut und Hornhaut. „Sie können ziemlich gute Bilder erzeugen. Wie die Bilder verarbeitet werden, ist allerdings eine schwierige Frage“, plaudert Till im Podcast.

Auch die Fortpflanzung der Quallen ist nicht nur bei den Exemplaren im Zoo Leipzig spannend! Vereinfacht erklärt, gibt es bei den Tieren ein sexuelles Stadium und ein anti-sexuelles Stadium. Die Männchen geben Sperma ins Wasser ab, was von den Weibchen mit dem Magen aufgenommen wird. Dadurch entsteht eine Larve, die in Wasser abgegeben wird, sich am Boden absetzt und zum Polyp entwickelt. Dort kann sich der Polyp dann ungeschlechtlich durch Zellteilung weiter fortpflanzen. Wenn die Bedingungen passen, „strobilliert“ der Polyp – und es entstehen wieder neue Quallen. Doch zu sehen bekommen die Besucher solche Polypen im Zoo Leipzig nicht. „Wir haben die Polypen separat hinter den Kulissen“, erklärt Till im Podcast. Denn Anemone-ähnlichen Lebewesen brauchen etwas andere Lebensbedingungen als die Quallen selbst. Zudem können sie sich schlecht absetzen, da das Aquarium ja regelmäßig gereinigt wird.
Doch die Polypen sind nicht die einzigen Tiere, die die Besucher des Zoo Leipzig nicht zu sehen bekommen. Ebenso verhält es sich mit der so genannten Australischen Seewespe – auch eine Qualle. Diese Art ist sehr giftig. „Es kommt darauf an, wie groß die Stellen sind, die mit den Tentakeln in Berührung kommen… Dann kann es sehr schnell lebensgefährlich werden. Die Zeit, in der man dann theoretisch stirbt, ist sehr kurz. Es ist dann schon schwierig, den Personen zu helfen“, erklärt der Zoo-Kurator in der Podcast-Folge. Zwar gebe es mittlerweile ein Gegengift, aber da der Tod bereits nach fünf bis 20 Minuten eintreten kann, könne das oft nicht schnell genug verabreicht werden. Sicherlich spannend für den ein oder anderen Besucher eine solche Qualle hautnah zu beobachten. Doch Tills Antwort ist kurz und eindeutig: „Nee, die werden wir glaube hier nicht im Zoo halten. Das wäre zu gefährlich“.
