Aus Anlass des morgigen Weltkindertages zeigt sich die Kinderrechtsorganisation Terre des Hommes besorgt über die Fahrlässigkeit, mit der Politik und Gesellschaft die Zukunft ihrer Kinder aufs Spiel setzen. Zahlreiche Ehrenamtliche und Mitarbeitende von Terre des Hommes nehmen deshalb am Klimastreik teil, der ebenfalls am 20. September stattfindet.
„Terre des Hommes unterstützt den Klimastreik am Weltkindertag, denn das Kinderrecht auf eine gesunde Umwelt und Klimagerechtigkeit sind essenziell für die Zukunft von Kindern weltweit“, so Joshua Hofert, Vorstandssprecher von Terre des Hommes. „Allerdings scheinen Kinderrechte und Klimagerechtigkeit in der Politik kaum Interesse zu finden. Mehr noch: Junge Menschen, die sich überall auf der Welt für den Schutz ihrer Umwelt und des Klimas einsetzen, werden häufig bedroht, kriminalisiert und in einigen Ländern sogar ermordet.“
Die dazu kürzlich veröffentlichen Zahlen der Organisation Global Witness sind erschütternd: 2023 wurden 196 Umweltaktivist*innen getötet, allein 79 davon in Kolumbien. Sie setzen sich einem hohen Risiko aus, insbesondere wenn sie den Interessen mächtiger Konzerne im Weg stehen. Laut Global Witness können zahlreiche Morde mit dem Widerstand gegen Bergbauvorhaben in Verbindung gebracht werden, wenn etwa junge Menschen dagegen protestieren, dass zum Abbau von Rohstoffen riesige Waldflächen gerodet und große Wassermengen benötigt werden, die in den umliegenden Dörfern dann fehlen.
Terre des Hommes unterstützt weltweit junge Umweltaktivist*innen dabei, ihr Recht auf eine gesunde Umwelt einzufordern. Von den Vereinten Nationen wurde dieses Kinderrecht vor einem Jahr anerkannt. Die Bundesregierung sowie global agierende Unternehmen fordert Terre des Hommes auf, Aktivist*innen in ihrem Einsatz für Klimagerechtigkeit besser zu schützen: „Sie riskieren ihr Leben für die Zukunft von Kindern und für künftige Generationen“, so Joshua Hofert. „In diplomatischen Beziehungen muss die Bundesregierung ihren Schutz einfordern und darauf drängen, dass Gewalt gegen sie nicht straflos bleibt. Unternehmen müssen in ihren Lieferketten Verträge mit Geschäftspartnern umgehend beenden, wenn diese Menschenrechte und Umweltrechte nicht einhalten.“
